Race, Gender, and Class in American Society

Course Description: How are gender, race, and class organizing principles of American society? Drawing on lectures, readings, and media, this course offers an introduction to the study of how gender, race, and class operate in the U.S. and the implications this has for social life. We begin by reflecting on how gender, race, and class are interrelated and how these categories mark bodies, organize institutions, and impact everyday experiences. We use sociological perspectives to analyze how the structure of American society, individual life, and group life chances are shaped by broader structures of privilege and disadvantage based on gender, race, and class.

Offered Summer 2025 at the University of Texas at Austin by the Department of Sociology.
